Siargao (Sayak) Airport

There are several ways to get to Siargao – Manila and Cebu are the two main ports that connects to Siargao. However, Surigao City which is the main land that connects you to Siargao island by a 2 to 3 hour ferry ride, has the most traveled routes.

But the fastest, easiest and also reasonable means to get in the island is by plane that lands at Sayak Airport. It is located in Barangay Sayak in the municipality of Del Carmen. It is also known as Siargao Airport and it serves the whole area of Siargao Island. General Luna, where Cloud 9 is located, is only an hour away from Sayak.

From Cebu to Siargao Island

Cebu Pacific Air flies Mon and Fri departing Cebu at 10:50 a.m. and returning from at 12:05 p.m. There are also connecting Cebu Pacific flights from Manila. For more info, visit their site at www.cebupacificair.com. Take note that there is a check in luggage limit of 10 kg and excess luggage is P 100/ kg. At the moment, there are only two flights per week and a 10PHP departure tax is being collected.

Improvements

Siargao airport was built in 1964 by the late President Diosdado Macapagal and back in 2008, President Gloria Arroyo initiated a project called Super Regions Program, which aims to improve economic activity through infrastructure project. Back then, the airport could only accommodate 19-seater planes from Cebu. Sayak Airport was renovated and upgraded with the 150 meters runway that enabled the facility to accommodate bigger planes that carries more than 100 passengers.

Just last year, PGMA inspected the progress of Siargao airport expansion. Local government expects that this project will improve the province’s economy – bringing in more tourists. Hopefully, this will bring more flights by Cebu Pacific since there are people who would love to pursue their love for surfing and would go for big waves no matter what the season is.

The success of the airport will help boost tourism in Siargao and will be no longer seasonal – people will come the island all throughout the year, especially now that Siargao is becoming famous not only for surfing but for fishing and mangrove cruises and many more!

The President also has high expectations from the incoming administration of this infrastructure project. She hoped that they will continue to work hard for this 24- million terminal expansion and renovation of the admin building and passenger terminal facilities, which is 60 percent complete, to make Siargao airport world class by 2015.
